Karan Johar's "Student Of The Year", featuring a fresh cast of newcomers, has done exceptionally well in the first week of its release.
Despite mixed reviews, the movie starring Siddharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan in the lead roles earned approximately ₹48 crore in its first week and is continuing to grow strong at the domestic box office.
"SOTY" is doing much better than previous movies like "Aiyyaa" and "Bhoot Returns" and is expected to remain the first choice of moviegoers. Other new releases like "Chakravyuh", "Ajab Gazaab Love" and "Rush" opened to dull start at domestic box office.
"SOTY" collected ₹9.25 crore on the first day and had done amazing business in weekdays as well.
The film has crossed the lifetime business of several films its opening week itself, trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh said.
The movie is Karan Johar's third film this year after "Agneepath" and "Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu". "Agneepath" was a super-hit film while "Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu" turned out to be a moderate box-office success.
Due to the ongoing Dasara festivities trade analyst Adarsh expects the movie to cross the ₹60 crore. Its collections were quite affected by Prakash Jha-directed movie, "Chakravyuha", which was released on Wednesday.
The political thriller starring Arjun Rampal, Abhay Deol, Manoj Bajpai, Kabir Bedi, Om Puri, Anjali Patil and Esha Gupta received positive response from critics. The movie opened to dull start but picked up later during the days ahead.
