A postal stamp featuring Dr BR Ambedkar was released on Wednesday. The event was part of the other programmes to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar, who is also known as the chief architect of the Indian constitution.
A press conference was held in New Delhi on Wednesday, where Union Minister of Communication and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad unveiled the stamp.
In an interview to NDTV, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot said: "The government has taken up a number of programmes to mark the occasion of Dr Ambedkar birth anniversary".
"Dr Ambedkar's village in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra will be developed as a model village, under the Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojana," the minister said.
An official statement released by the government also stated that this was aimed at making the world aware about Dr Ambedkar's work for the underprivileged people.
Gehlot also added they had received an approval from the finance ministry to also release a coin in honour of the social reformer.
Dr Ambedkar was conferred the Bharat Ratna -- the highest civilian award -- in 1990, even though he passed away in 1956.
