Bollywood actor, Shah Rukh Khan, has tweeted his outrage at scenes of a village chief, from the Muktsar district in Punjab, slapping a woman.
Barinder Pal Kaur, who works as a teacher, came to the office of the Shiromani Akali Dal, a political party, looking for more permanent employment. However, all she received was a slap from the village chief of Daula village; an act that was caught by television news cameras.
"Just saw a male Sarpanch slap and rough up a woman teacher on tv...disgusting & should be punished for sure," Khan tweeted.
According to an NDTV report, the teacher was actually waiting for Harsimrat Kaur Badal, a Member of Parliament (MP) and the daughter-in-law of Punjab's Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal. An independent source confirmed that Barinder wanted to submit a memo asking for permanent jobs.
Meanwhile, Harsimrat Kaur condemned the incident, which happened before she arrived at the office, and promised action against the sarpanch. She stressed that there could be no reason for anyone to hit a woman and also said she would speak to the Superintendent of Police.
The television footage shows dozens of policemen looking on, as the village chief slaps Barinder.
