India has earned the wrath of Sri Lanka by voting in favour of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) resolution to investigate into the alleged war crimes on Thursday. Sri Lankan media blasted India's decision and branded it as a "loser."
The editorial of The Island newspaper captioned 'A defeat as good as victory' took a potshot at India.
"India has been a loser in Geneva, though it helped the US win," it said, adding, "The US and its friends should be ashamed that they, in spite of their combined might could muster only 24 votes."
With most Asian countries like China, Maldives, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines and others voting against the resolution, The Island claimed that India failed to carry Asia and that Sri Lanka has defeated India in Asia.
Other media houses in the Island country like Daily News, Thinakaran, Thinakkural, Dinamina, Lakbima, Mawbima, Divayina and Lankadeepa came down heavily on India for voting in favour of US-led resolution.
Twenty four countries, including India, voted in favour of the resolution while 15 countries, including Russia and China, were against and eight abstained from voting.
The UN resolution is to urge Sri Lanka to investigate the alleged war crimes committed both by the Sri Lankan army and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during the civil war.
