In another gruesome case of violence against women, a teenage girl was allegedly burnt alive by a spurned lover in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh.
The girl has suffered 90 percent burn injuries and is battling for her life in a hospital affiliated to Aligarh Muslin University (AMU).
The incident happened on Monday night when the accused, identified as Arjun, sneaked into her house in Loharra village, poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.
The girl was initially taken to the district hospital and was referred to Aligarh Medical College for treatment, Superintendent of Police Happy Guptan told NDTV.
The victim's father is also said to have sustained some burn injuries when he tried to save her.
On Tuesday evening, police registered a case of attempt to murder against Arjun who is on the run. His father was taken into custody for questioning.
"There are many versions of this story; we are not sure whether the accused (Arjun) or his father (Lekh Raja) set the girl on fire. However, the girl has said that it was Arjun who set her on fire," said officials, IBN Live reported.
The girl's father said that Arjun had been pestering his daughter for a long time. Despite being already married, Arjun proposed to the girl but was refused.
On hearing about his advances, the girl's family restricted her from going out of the house or to college. Her father also lodged a complaint against Arjun at a local police station, but no action was taken against him.
In retaliation to the girl's refusal to marry him and her father's complaint, Arjun set her on fire.
