Sports Minister Vijay Goel on Thursday announced a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh to each member of the World Cup winning kabaddi team. India defeated Iran in the final of the Kabaddi World Cup 2016 in Ahmedabad last month.
The Anup Kumar-led strong Indian contingent was earlier in the day felicitated by the sports minister, who also announced that the government would do everything possible to try and get the sport included in the Olympics.
"All players will get Rs 10 lakh each and the coach will also be awarded. We will also strive that this game of ours is there in Olympics," said Goel in the felicitation ceremony hosted at his Delhi residence. "It's not just about cricket, we want football, hockey and other games to be promoted."
India, who came into the Kabaddi World Cup 2016, as one of the favourites to lift the title, did prevail supreme at the end of it all. Anup's men, with some great display fro Ajay Thakur and Pardeep Narwal, put on a dominating display both in the semifinals as well as the final against Iran, defeating them 38-29.
India bagged their third Kabaddi World Cup crown in the process.
