The Mumbai Police on Friday arrested the driver of a Mercedes car that had run over five pavement dwellers late on Thursday.
The Mercedes' driver, Amin Khan, fled the area after the incident, which took place on Masjid Bhandar Mohammed Ali Road. However, he is now in police custody and a case has been registered at the Pydhonie Police Station in Mumbai, reported ANI.
The five injured, four women and a child, were admitted to JJ Hospital, and two of them are reportedly in a critical state.
The Mercedes crashed into two cars before running over the people sleeping on the pavement.
"Investigation is happening right know... However, we are not sure of the number of persons inside the car... It can be determined only after thorough investigation," Ashok Dudhe, a senior police officer, told NDTV.
The investigation into the case is still underway.
In 2013, Mumbai had topped the list of road accidents, according to National Crime Records Bureau.
