Akshay Kumar's heist drama, "Special 26" opened pretty well with good occupancy at theaters across the country.
The multi-starrer film directed by Neeraj Pandey of "A Wednesday" fame was released across 1750 screens in India. The movie, based on a real life story of a group of con artists, was expected to witness a dull start but positive reviews, pre-release buzz and the star cast helped the movie to pick up well at theaters.
The film collected approximately ₹ 7 crore in India on the opening day.
"INDIA: #Special26 Fri *early estimates* ₹7 cr [1750 screens]. Picked up in the evening shows," trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted.
The morning shows had received dull response, but the movie picked up later in the evening at multiplexes in the key market. The business was slightly low at single screens.
The weekend collection is important for the film to survive at the box office and also to cover the cost of the film.
Meanwhile, "Special 26" opened to a lukewarm response in international market. The film raked in ₹21.90 lakhs from UK, ₹11.86 lakhs from Australia and ₹4.86 lakhs from New Zealand.
"UK: #Special26 Fri £ 25,858 [Rs 21.90 lacs] from 46 locations [9 locations yet to report].AUSTRALIA: #Special26 Fri A$ 21,442 [Rs 11.86 lacs] from 10 locations. NEW ZEALAND: #Special26 Thu NZ$ 1,357, Fri NZ$ 9,496. Total: NZ$ 10,853 [Rs 4.86 lacs] from 8 locations," Adrash tweeted.
Apart from Akshay, the film also features Kajal Aggarwal, Jimmy Shergill, Manoj Bajpai and Anupam Kher in lead roles.
