Sony's Xperia smartphone series hasn't seen the same success as the company's PlayStation business, but the handsets do hold some ground in the premium smartphone segment despite being overshadowed by the likes of iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones. As a part of its continued efforts to better compete with rivals, Sony added a new smartphone to the mix.
Ahead of the coveted IFA 2018 show, Sony launched the Xperia XZ3 expanding its flagship portfolio within just six months of Xperia XZ2's launch in Berlin. But that's how Sony launches its flagship upgrades, twice in a year, just like OnePlus.
Sony Xperia XZ3 is official and all the details about the flagship smartphone have been revealed, putting an end to all the leaks and rumours over the last few days. But there's nothing ground-breaking about the Xperia XZ3, except for a few noteworthy upgrades.
Sony Xperia XZ3 is slimmer, taller and lighter compared to the Xperia XZ2. Check out the dimensions below:
Xperia XZ3 | Xperia XZ2 |
158 x 73 x 9.9 mm (193g) | 153 x 72 x 11.1 mm (198g) |
Next up is the display and this one's huge. Sony Xperia XZ3 features a 6-inch full-screen OLED HDR display with 2880x1440 resolution, which should look really bright and vivid compared to the 5.7-inch Full HD+ HDR display on the Xperia XZ2. The pricing of the Xperia XZ3 hasn't been revealed, which would determine whether choosing OLED works in Sony's favour.
If adding OLED raises other concerns such as the battery, Sony Xperia XZ3 makes up with a slight bump in the battery size. There's a 3,300mAh battery with Quick Charge 3 and Stamina Mode in the Xperia XZ3. The former flagship offers a 3,180mAh battery.
The rear camera on the Xperia XZ3 is same as the one on Xperia XZ2, but the front camera has received a major bump. From a 5MP 1/5" Exmor R 23mm wide angle lens with f/2.2 aperture in the Xperia XZ2 to 13MP 1/3.06" Exmor RS 23mm wide angle lens with f/1.9 aperture in the Xperia XZ3, users will see a lot of difference.
Finally, Sony decided to go with a new colour for its Xperia XZ3, which comes in standard black and silver, its signature Forest Green and an all-new Bordeaux Red. The Ash Pink seems to be the colour reserved for the Xperia XZ2. Also, the Xperia XZ3 comes with Android Pie out-of-the-box.
The rest of the features in the Xperia XZ3 remain unchanged. Here's a quick look at them:
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor
- 19MP Motion Eye rear camera with 960fps Super Slow Mo, 4K HDR recording, and more
- 4GB RAM
- 64GB internal storage with microSD card support up to 400GB
- IP65/68 water resistant design
- Rear-mounted fingerprint scanner
- Dual SIM support, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB Type-C, 3D Creator and more
