Sony launched its much anticipated Xperia Z in India on Wednesday with a price tag of ₹38,990.
Earlier in the day, the smartphone made its appearance on e-retailer FlipKart for pre-orders. Sony Xperia Z sports a 5-inch full HD capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels and is powered by a quad core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor. It runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system and features a 13-megapixel rear camera along with a 2.2-megapixel camera on the front.
"We plan to establish Xperia Z among the top 3 smartphone brands in India. We want to exploit the business foundation we have and will make Xperia one of the biggest categories in Sony India," said Kenichiro Hibi, Managing director, Sony India
The smartphone supports WIFI, Bluetooth, NFC and 4G LTE. In terms of memory, it comes with 2GB RAM and internal storage of 16GB which is expandable up to 32GB through a microSD card. It also comes with IP57 certification for dust and water resistance.
The smartphone was long speculated to hit the Indian market. The high-end Xperia Z smartphone, which was recently unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show, made a good start after its launch in home country Japan and several parts of Europe. The device is currently available in 60 countries.
"India is a high focus and high growth market for Sony. The smartphone market in India holds very strong mid-term growth potential, with smartphone sales projected to be approximately 33 million units by 2013 in India. Our ultimate objective is to position Xperia among the top 3 smartphone brands in India," said Dennis Van Schie, Corporate Vice president, Sony Mobile Communications at the launch.
The company has also launched its Xperia ZL in the country along with Xperia Z for ₹36,990.The phones is expected to hit retail stores on 12 March.
