Sony's yet-to-be released mid-range smartphone has been reportedly spotted at a popular benchmarking site revealing the key specifications of the device.
Sony's device codenamed D2403 has made a stop at the popular benchmarking platform GFXBench. The unnamed smartphone seems be a mid-range device, and is shown featuring 4.4-inch qHD (888x540p) display, Android v4.4.2 KitKat OS, Snapdragon 400 series quad-core processor backed by Adreno 305 graphics engine.
Other features include 1GB RAM, 16GB memory, 8.0-megapixel camera (with flash support, full HD video recording ability), 0.3-megapixel (VGA) front camera and standard connectivity features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and more.
Going by the specifications list, Sony is prepping D2403 to take on the popular mid-range smartphone Moto G, which got released just a couple of months in select markets. It got a huge response in India and globally too making it the best selling Motorola phone of all time.
Both the phones have pretty much same specifications, except in the display and camera departments. Sony device seems to be less superior, but if the phone features a microSD card slot and get launched with a competitive price tag, D2403 is certain to give stiff challenge to Moto G, especially in emerging markets like India, where smartphone adoption has just started to take-off, unlike developed markets in North America and Europe which have almost reached its peak.
Sony's mid-range smartphones released recently such as Xperia C and M series have pushed the company past Apple in India to become second largest smartphone brand in terms of value in the subcontinent, reported The Economics Times, citing IDC (International Data Corporation) analyst.
Currently, Sony has four devices - Xperia M (and Dual), Xperia C, Xperia L, Xperia P and Xperia J - all retailing under ₹16,500 price in India.
As of now, we don't have conclusive proof when Sony D2430 might get released or not, but if it does make the debut soon especially in India, Sony can inch closer to the leader, Samsung who sit pretty high in the table with more than 40-percent market share. Year 2014 seems to be crucial for Sony and other MNC brands to build the brand in niche highly competitive mid-range price-sensitive developing countries.
Rival HTC is also said to focus more on this sector this year, to make up for last year's debacle, which the Taiwanese company concentrated more on marketing high-end. HTC One is receiving critical acclaim all over the world, as the smartphone could not bring enough revenue, leading to company's first operational loss.
