Germany-based firm, Security Research Labs has released a feature-rich Android app SnoopSnitch, which can warn user of being spied on their smartphone.
"SnoopSnitch is an Android app that collects and analyzes mobile radio data to make you aware of your mobile network security and to warn you about threats like fake base stations (IMSI catchers), user tracking and over-the-air updates. With SnoopSnitch you can use the data collected in the GSM Security Map at gsmmap.org and contribute your own data to GSM Map," said the company.
For the uninitiated, IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) catchers, more commonly known as 'stingrays' are used by hackers or sometimes by government security agencies to spy on private calls, read text messages, location tracking of user (via tower signal), and SS7 (Signaling System 7) attacks.
This 'stingrays' act as "fake" mobile tower acting between the target mobile phone(s) and the service provider's real towers, it is considered a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack, which mainly do the tapping of private calls on phone, but now these spying devices can be detected by SnoopSnitch.
However, SnoopSnitch has some limitation as it can work only on select rooted Android smartphones powered by Qualcomm processor.
