Popular communication app Skype is down for several users around the world, making it impossible for them to receive calls, login to the app and change status. DownDetector confirmed the outage on its website, reporting the first occurrence at 4:23am EDT. Skype acknowledged the issue on Twitter and at its own Heartbeat blog, promising a quick fix.
"Affected users will not be able to change their status, their contacts will all show as offline and they will be unable to start Skype calls. We're working on a fix for this issue and hope to have an update for you soon. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused while we get this resolved," Leonas Sendrauskas, Web QA engineer at Skype, explained in an official blog on Monday.
Skype did not reveal the nature of the problem but simply stated that the outage is caused due to "an issue with the status settings of Skype." Skype for Web, which is currently in beta, continues to work as normal and is not affected by the outage.
According to DownDetector's outage map, Skype app appears to be down in UK, US and parts of Japan and Australia. Some users in India and Pakistan have also reported issues signing into the app.
Skype had encountered problems in January and July this year. Users have often turned to the company's official blog and Twitter account to express their rage. Below are some tweets to show how users across the world are responding to Skype's outage:
We are working to fix an issue which is preventing some users from logging in & using Skype. We apologize for any inconvenience.
