In a shocking incident reported from Central China, a mother of a two-year-old boy was killed after she fell into an escalator at a shopping mall in Jingzhou on 26 July.
The CCTV footage of the mishap shows the landing platform of the escalator collapsed the moment the woman, identified as 30-year-old Xiang Liujuan by local media, stepped on it along with her son.
Liujuan managed to throw her child to safety to the attendants before she was trapped inside the escalator.
The incident occured at 10:09 local time (02:09 GMT) on Sunday.
The shop attendants tried in vain to rescue her, but she was unfortunately dragged into the escalator.
Rescuers could only retrieve her body at around 14:00 local time after disassembling the escalator.
"Just watched the cctv footage of the escalator swallow a toddler's mother .... I was screaming," writes a social media user on Twitter.
Reports that were unconfirmed suggested that the workmen, who had carried out maintenance works at on the escalator recently, replaced the platform but forgot to 'secure it with screws', leading to the tragic incident.
