R Balki's directorial film "Shamitabh" had a decent opening weekend at the domestic box office. With 30-40% of occupancy and limited screen count, the Amitabh Bachchan-Dhanush starrer managed to take its three day total to ₹13.25 crore.
"Shamitabh" opened to average response and minted only ₹3.5 crore on first Friday. As expected the business showed upward trend at the box office market on Saturday and Sunday due to good reviews.
The film minted ₹4.75 crore and ₹5 crore on Saturday and Sunday from domestic box office, respectively.
"#Shamitabh Fri 3.5 cr, Sat 4.75 cr, Sun 5 cr. Total: ₹ 13.25 cr. India biz," trade analysts Taran Adarsh tweeted.
Amitabh and R.Balki's latest outing has fared better than their last film "Paa" (2009). "Shamitabh" minted ₹13.25 crore in its first weekend, whereas "Paa" had minted ₹10.90 crore.
Meanwhile, the film has four more days to fare in decent amount from the box office, as the upcoming film "Roy" might affect the earnings of the film.
"Roy" starring Arjun Rampal, Jacqueline Fernandez and Ranbir Kapoor, has garnered good hype at the box office. And since it features Ranbir in an important role, the film is expected to take a good start at the box office.
"Shamitabh", which tells the story of two individuals with the desire of becoming actors, has received rave reviews from critics and audience. Looking at the audience's response, Amitabh posted on his blog saying that "it gives credence to the film".
"Reading the reviews on 'Shamitabh' gives credence to the film, the thought and the performance...and that is most gratifying for the artiste...many varied colours are painted, but what remains without any doubt is the effort and the execution of that which has been elusive, for most," Big B wrote on his official blog.
