Bollywood stars Shahrukh Khan and Kajol may have worked together in several hit films over the years, but the beloved on-screen couple's most memorable film will always be their 1995 superhit Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (DDLJ). The movie catapulted both actors to superstardom and till date holds the record for the longest-running Bollywood film ever.
After a long gap (the last film starring the duo was My Name Is Khan), fans will get to see the two stars together on the big screen in director Rohit Shetty's upcoming action comedy, Dilwale.
IBTimes UK spoke to SRK and Kajol during a recent press meet and asked if fans would get to see any fun references to DDLJ in their upcoming film -- something similar to what Khan spoofed in his earlier film, Chennai Express.
"This is the reference," said Khan pointing to Kajol and himself. "The film features both of us; I don't think there can be a bigger reference to DDLJ than that!" The actor continued, "In Chennai [Express], we had it just for the fun element," to which Kajol quipped, "...And then we took it seriously in Dilwale!"
Incidentally, Dilwale and Chennai Express director, Shetty, is also a big fan of DDLJ. And that became more evident when he recently directed SRK and Kajol in a special video marking 20 years of the film's release.
"You know, Kajol and I feel very honoured -- a director of Rohit's calibre -- one of his favourite films is DDLJ," Khan told IBTimes UK. "And to say it again...that one of the favouritest directors that Aditya Chopra (who's made DDLJ) has, is Rohit Shetty."
"So, it's a strange kind of mutual admiration without them actually meeting each other or talking about each other. Whenever I meet them separately on different occasions, they're always praising each other's work-- so there's a lot of respect there."
Apart from SRK and Kajol, Dilwale also stars Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon, Boman Irani and Kabir Bedi in key roles. The film is slated to release on 18 December 2015. Check out the first trailer of Dilwale below:
