Rajouri , Sep 08 (ANI): The Red Cross came as a beacon of hope to the flood ravished people of Kashmir as officials distributed relief material to the affected victims. The Red Cross distributed relief material for the homeless in the flooded areas of Kalakote, Nowshera and Sunderbani in Rajouri district. More than 175 people lost their lives in the unprecedented floods and thousands were left homeless as Jhelum and other rivers overflowed their banks in Kashmir. Army regiments like the 425 Field Hospitals have set up relief camps in the state and have collaborated with district hospitals and NGOs to provide medical aid to the affected. Gurdaspur, Sep 08 (ANI): Dozens of border villages and farmlands were inundated due to floodwaters in Gurdaspur district of Punjab, while 18 people including children have been rescued. These villages across river Ravi remained cut off following flooding of the Basanter Nullah near the Pakistan borders. The incessant rains in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab have created havoc when the river waters breached embankments on the Indian side and the flow of water increased sharply. Meanwhile, Indian army teams conducted rescue operations and saved 18 people who were stuck in the flooded areas. Evacuation is being carried out. Kathua, Sep 07 (ANI): More than 100 people, including children and women, were evacuated from various villages in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir as floods, triggered by heavy downpours, caused destruction in the region. The Red Cross society along with district administration has provided tents, medical aid and food to affected families. The flood-affected people are shifting their valuables and luggage along with their live stocks to safer places and shelter homes provided by the district administration. Authorities declared a disaster alert after two days of heavy rain hit villages across Kashmir, causing the worst flooding in two decades. Heavy rain is expected and the state's main river, the Jhelum, and its tributaries are flowing several feet above the danger mark. Flash floods triggered by heavy downpours caused destruction as authorities closed four bridges connecting the two parts of Jammu after suffering severe damage. Karimganj, Sep 06 (ANI): In another shameful crime against women, two school girls were found dead in Karimganj district in Assam. Two Assam school girls, who had been missing from their homes since Wednesday, were found hanging from a tree on Thursday in the state's Karimganj district, close to the Bangladesh border. The police suspect that the girls were raped and then murdered. According to the police, the bodies have been recovered and sent for a post-mortem. Only after the post-mortem and forensic reports, will the police be able determine the cause of death and if the girls had been molested.
