New Delhi, March 10 (ANI): Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Monday emphasized on the freedom of media for the interest of the nation while addressing the Delhi's unit of Kerala's union of working journalists in the national capital. He also called on media to do extensive research before reporting news after mentioning the example of a newspaper that ran incorrect news about Reserve Bank of India. He quoted United States Watergate scandal case as an example of proper research and verification of facts. He also mentioned about how dangerous the profession of journalism and the restrictions faced by the journalists today.

India offers help to trace missing Malaysian plane

Farrukhabad / Ahmednagar, March 10 (ANI): Union Foreign Minister, Salman Khurshid, said that the government has offered help to the Malaysian government to trace the missing plane with 239 people on board. Officials investigating the disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines jetliner with 239 people on board suspect it may have disintegrated in mid-flight, a source told, as Vietnam reported a possible sighting of the wreckage of the plane. Khurshid sent a condolence message on behalf of the nation. Family members of the five Indian passengers missing in the incident are anxiously waiting for any information about the fate of the plane and their near and dear ones. K V Shirsath, father-in-law of missing Indian passenger, Kranti Shirsath, said that she was on her way to China to meet her husband.

Pune's soccer fans enjoy Northeast football tournament

Pune, March 09 (ANI): Soccer fans made a beeline to Police Football Ground in Shivaji Nagar in Pune to watch the 1st North East Community Organization Pune Football Trophy (NECOP) 2014. A total of 13 teams comprising players from the Northeast participated in the tournament organized by the North East Community Organization, Pune. The aim was to promote national integration and unity. A large number of spectators gathered to watch the thrilling tournament. The Naga student Union, Pune won the title defeating Manipur Student Association Pune 6-0. The winners bagged a cash prize of Rs 20,000 along with a trophy while the 1st runners-up received Rs 10,000 and a trophy.

D Purandeswari decided to join BJP over AP bifurcation

New Delhi, March 08 (ANI): Former Union minister Daggubati Purandeswari met BJP leader L K Advani and decided to join the BJP in protest against the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. Government to set up inflation target, RBI to implement: Chidambaram

New Delhi, March 07 (ANI): Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram asserted on Friday that the government has the right set up an inflation target while the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) role is to implement the decision. The comment by Chidambaram comes after a RBI panel in January proposed moving to an inflation target of 4 percent in three years, with a 2 percent band on either side when setting monetary policy, sharply below current levels. The recommendation raised concerns about a potential clash with the traditionally more pro-growth finance ministry, which were further reinforced after RBI surprised investors in January by raising interest rates by a quarter percentage point, its third hike in five months. Chidambaram made it clear that parliament will set an inflation target and entrust the central bank to implement the propositions.
