German envoy hopes for decision in interest of students in language row

New Delhi, Nov 17 (ANI): German envoy to India, Michael Steiner, hoped for a decision in the interest of students as the Chancellor, Angela Merkel, raised the language row issue in schools with Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in Brisbane. The Human Resource Development ministry decided to drop the German language in favour of Sanskrit for over 70,000 students across 500 Kendriya Vidyalayas from classes VI to VIII. The issue prompted German chancellor Angela Merkel to raise it with Modi who assured her of looking into it within the confines of the Indian education system. Nov 17, 2014

India celebrates National Press Day, IandB Ministry says nation believes in freedom of press

New Delhi, Nov 16 (ANI): Addressing a gathering to celebrate National Press Day in New Delhi on Sunday, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Rajyavardhan Rathore said that the government believes in freedom of press for the fourth pillar of democracy. A book related to the media was also released at the event by the dignitaries. This year, the National Press Day celebration has been dedicated to the 'Role of Media in Facilitating Transparency in Public Affairs.' Various seminars, symposia, workshops, debates and discussions on topics related to the Press were organised to mark the day. Addressing the gathering, the Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said that media should act with responsibility and not turn into paparazzi. Various journalists, photographers and freelancers excelling in print media were also honoured by the Council which is the only authority enjoying the statutory mandate to encourage the media to pursue its duties. CPI (M) to protest over squeezing of MGNREGA

Patna, Nov 16 (ANI): Communist Party of India-Marxist CPI (M), on Sunday said that it would launch a nationwide protest against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government for squeezing Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act MGNREGA, which provides jobs for 50 million households. CPI-M general secretary, Prakash Karat, while addressing a news briefing in Patna, said the scheme was important for the poor. Karat said that MGNREGA benefited India's northeastern state of Tripura but if the funds were cut, 50 percent people would not have any work. Roadshow promotes tourism between India, Bangladesh

Agartala, Nov 16 (ANI): A four-day road show, 'Maitri Tourism 2014', kicked off in Agartala to promote tourism between India and Bangladesh. The event is being organised by Bangladesh Foundation for Tourism Development and Bangladesh Inbound Tour Operators Association in collaboration with Tripura Tourism Development Forum and Tripura Tourism Development Corporation. A seminar took place to discuss the sub-regional tourism circuit linking India's northeast, Bangladesh and Myanmar, and the land routes linking the capital cities of Dhaka and Agartala. A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Secretary Subhas Das said tourism is among the most flourishing sectors in the world and plays a significant role in generating employment.
