Amarnath Yatra: Pahalgam route closed due to heavy snowfall, pilgrims left with only Baltal route

Srinagar, June 27 (ANI): With only a day left for Hindu pilgrimage of Amarnath Yatra to commence, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir closed one of the routes in Pahalgam due to heavy snowfall. The pilgrims are now left with only one route, that is, through the Baltal base camp route. Addressing a news conference in Srinagar, Chief Executive Officer of Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), RK Gupta said Pahalgam route will remain closed for first three days. Thousands of pilgrims undertake this journey to the shrine cave to worship an ice stalagmite called Shivlinga, believed to be the symbol of Lord Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction and regeneration. The cave containing the holy Shiva shrine is located at a snow-capped mountainous peak of the Himalayas, 290 kilometres northwest of the Poonch district in Kashmir. Seventh body recovered from Beas river, search still on

Mandi, June 12 (ANI): Rescuers recovered a seventh body from the River Beas on Thursday. A search is still on to find the remaining 17 bodies from the river which had swept away 24 college students and a tour operator earlier this week. Meanwhile, a team of Navy officials visited the place and is likely to assist in rescue operations. More divers with latest equipments are also expected to join the search operations. The students, belonging to VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology in Hyderabad, were clicking photographs when they were swept away by the river after the officials released water from the Larji Dam located upstream. The water of the river suddenly increased following its release from the reservoir of 126 MW Larji hydropower project.
