Family of Indian hostage relieved as Sydney siege ends

Guntur/New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): Family members of Indian hostage took a sigh of relief after the news came of safe exit of their son in Sydney cafe siege. Infosys employee, Viswakanth Ankireddy was among the several hostages who were safely evacuated from the cafe after being held there at a gunpoint. He is a resident of Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh. Family members were elated to see Ankireddy coming out of the cafe on television, a dramatic end to a standoff that had dragged on for more than 16 hours. Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin congratulated the Australian authority for handling the grave situation. Australian security forces opened fire as they stormed the Sydney cafe where several hostages were being held. Media said that two people, including the gunman, had been killed. Dec 16, 2014

New Delhi, Dec 15 (ANI): Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu on Monday said that some information has come that there is one Indian among the hostages inside the Lindt cafe in Sydney. He added that External Affairs Ministry is keeping in touch with the Indian embassy as well as that of the counterparts. Earlier in the day, an armed man took an undisclosed number of people hostage at the Martin Place Cafe in Sydney and displayed a black flag with Arabic script in the window, sparking a security alert in Australia. New Delhi, Dec 15 (ANI): Spokesperson of Ministry of External Affairs Syed Akbaruddin on Monday said that the authorities are working to ensure safety of Indian nationals in the wake of Sydney caf hostage. Akbaruddin said that the staff of the Indian consulate in Sydney has been evacuated and a helpline is set up. He added that the ministry's main focus was the safety of Indian nationals in Sydney and that Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj has been in touch with high commissioner who is in touch with Indian authorities for all updates. Armed assailant was holding an unknown number of hostages inside a central Sydney cafe on Monday, police said, with local television showing some being forced to hold up a black flag with white Arabic writing in the window.
