Fundamentalists block road to democracy in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Dec 02: Trains were attacked, crude bombs were hurled and vehicles were torched by violent BNP-led Jamaat protesters to oppose the announcement of Parliamentary elections in the country. The Election Commission wants to hold elections on January 5 next year, but BNP-led 18-party alliance is boycotting it and is demanding non-party interim government to oversee the contest. The 48-hour long nation-wide strike by Khaleda Zia-led BNP and its allies paralyzed business, education and health facilities across the country. Around a dozen people were killed in violence and over 50 injured. Protesters attacked the Election Commission offices in Bogra, causing damage to offices, official papers and voters ID cards. Narayanganj/ Bogra, Dec 02 (ANI): Violence erupted in parts of Bangladesh as opposition parties went on a rampage, burnt vehicles, exploded crude bombs and sabotaged railway tracks amid the ongoing 72-hour blockade called by them to oppose the upcoming polls in the country. Reportedly, three passengers in Narayanganj district sustained burn injuries as agitators set their vehicles on fire. According to reports, the blasts took place when bombs exploded accidentally while they were being assembled at a house in Idinthakarai village. Police arrest Maoist leader in Jharkhand, recover bombs

Jharkhand, Nov 6 (ANI): In two separate incidents in Jharkhand, police recovered 22 bombs and arrested a Maoist leader. Acting on a tip off in Latehar district of Jharkhand, the police managed to defuse the bombs, which were apparently planted to attack the security forces. Meanwhile, in Palamu district of Jharkhand, police nabbed a Maoist leader, who is believed to have been associated with several attacks by the rebels in the region.
