Harrowing time for commuters as buses in Chennai go on strike

Chennai, Dec 28 (ANI): People in Tamil Nadu had a harrowing time as majority of buses went off roads after employees of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) went on strike on Sunday (December 28). The employees lamented the state government has failed to take care of employees' welfare and they sat on indefinite strike to press for their demands. TNSTC employees are seeking wage revision and also want the jobs of 20,000 temporary employees to be regularised. The strike was supposed to commence from Monday (December 29) but began a day earlier after the salary of the labourers who were absent from work was not given to them. Adding more to the worry of the state residents, private vans and auto rickshaws were seen charging 10 times more than the usual fare. Close to 1,20,000 workers went on strike from Sunday. The intense cold wave continued to tighten its grip, forcing people to stay indoors and sit around bonfires. Visibility in New Delhi was reduced due to thick blanket of fog and people sat around bonfires and drank hot tea to keep themselves warm. According to reports, Delhi recorded the second lowest temperature of the season with mercury dipping to 2 degrees Celsius. Dense fog affected train services in Kanpur city with about 70 trains being rescheduled. The cold wave has added troubles to lives of daily wage labourers and vagabond as they have no alternative to fight the chill. One vagabond died due to extreme cold in Kanpur on Wednesday. Meanwhile, devotees took holy dip in River Ganges in Allahabad. Several trains and flights were delayed and rescheduled due to low visibility as thick blanket of fog enveloped several northern cities. In Rajasthan, people sat around bonfires to keep themselves warm. Inclement weather condition has aggravated problems of daily wage labourers and homeless people. In capital New Delhi, trains were running behind scheduled time due to fog. The maximum temperature recorded was 15 degrees Celsius and minimum around seven degrees. Passengers said they had to sleep at railway station as the trains were getting delayed by several hours.
