Gujarat HC rejects Teesta Setalvad's anticipatory bail plea

Ahmedabad, Feb 12 (ANI): Activist Teesta Setalvad's anticipatory bail plea in connection with an embezzlement case was rejected by the Gujarat High Court on Thursday. Besides Setalwad, her husband Javed Anand, former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri's (who was killed in Gujarat during the 2002 riots) son Tanvir Jafri are accused of misappropriating funds. They are accused of misusing funds to the tune of Rs.1.51 crore. All the accused now face arrest. Denying any misuse of funds, Setalwad had blamed political motives behind the case, say reports. Authorities step up measures to combat swine flu in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Feb 12 (ANI): Authorities in Gujarat stepped up measures to combat the fatal H1N1 virus as swine flu cases rose across the state. In Ahmedabad, arrangements for separate wards, beds, adequate medical supplies, including Tamiflu medicines, have been made in hospitals. People are being educated on preventive measures and have been instructed to wear masks, wash their hands frequently, besides sanitizing the environment. Superintendent of a government hospital, M Prabhakar said that 84 new swine flu cases were reported and 240 cases had been treated till now. The virus has killed 191 people in the country in January alone, with southern Telangana being the worst hit state. So far, 2,038 people have been afflicted by the virus in India. Feb 12, 2015

Airport authorities in Chennai protest government's privatisation move

Chennai, Feb 11 (ANI): Hundreds of Airports Authority of India (AAI) employees staged a protest in front of the airport in Chennai on Wednesday (February 11) against central government's attempt to privatise airports across the country. The government has rekindled plans to privatise Airports Authority of India, the state-owned airport operator. Meanwhile, chairman of joint forum of employees union, Saughata Roy, said that workers were totally against the privatisation. Millions of Indians are flying each year in one of the world's fastest growing aviation markets, but the government wants to speed up the process by expanding airports and boosting air connectivity in remote areas. The government plans to develop airports in the cities of Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Jaipur under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Vanzara gets bail in Ishrat Jahan case

Ahemdabad, Feb 05 (ANI): Former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer DG Vanzara was on Thursday granted bail by a special court in Gujarat in connection with the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case. The court has asked Vanzara to submit a surety bond of Rs two lakh. Suspended Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) PP Pandey has also been granted bail in this case. The court has asked Pandey to submit two surety bonds of Rs. 50,000 each and his passport as condition for the bail. This is the first instance in which an accused has been granted regular bail in this case. Pandey was the Joint Commissioner of Police of Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch, when 19-year old Ishrat Jahan was killed along with three men in a police encounter in 2004. All four were shot dead by police officers who claimed that they were involved in a plot to kill Narendra Modi, who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat at that time. Feb 5, 2015
