Death sentence to 5 Indian fishermen by Sri Lanka sparks protest in Tamil Nadu

Chennai/ New Delhi, Nov 01 (ANI): Members of Communist Party of India (CPI) in Tamil Nadu on Saturday protested death sentence given to five Indian fishermen by a Sri Lanka court, even as foreign ministry promised the concerns have been conveyed to Sri Lankan authorities in New Delhi and Colombo. The slogan-shouting protesters in Chennai city termed Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa a butcher, demanding revocation of the ruling. State General Secretary of CPI, D Pandian said it is shocking news and demanded the Indian government take the matter to the United Nations. Pandian also added the Indian government should declare Sri Lanka non-friendly nation. MEA clarifies on unwed mothers passport rules, says India don't stand for gender discrimination

New Delhi, Nov 01 (ANI): Foreign ministry denied media reports that an unwed mother would have to declare how she conceived while applying for her child's passport. MEA Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said any single parent had to furnish only two documents - birth certificate of the child and affidavit before a magistrate.
