India files appeal in Sri Lankan court against fishermen death sentence

Nay Pyi Taw, Oct 12 (ANI): India has filed an appeal in the Sri Lankan Supreme Court against verdict of the high court that awarded death sentence to five Indian fishermen in the island nation in a drug smuggling case. Five Indian fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy in 2011 on charges of smuggling drugs and on October 30, the Colombo High Court held the five fishermen guilty of drug trafficking. Foreign ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin, while addressing mediapersons in Myanmar capital Nay Pyi Taw, said India was confident that justice would prevail in the case. PM Modi to visit Australia this week for G-20 summit

New Delhi, Nov 11 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit Australia from November 16-18 for G-20 summit later this week, said foreign ministry official. India wants to keep a so-called 'peace clause' that protects its huge state food purchases until the World Trade Organization can strike a definitive deal on stockpiling. As originally envisaged in Bali, the clause would expire in four years. India’s foreign ministry official Anil Wadhwa said Modi`s visit to Australia would improve and strengthen relations between the two countries. India would also discuss contours of an agreement between US, Japan, India and Australia to check Chinese influence in the region. The Prime Minister will hold delegation-level talks with his Australian counterpart Tony Abbott, and will address the Parliament in Canberra. He will have political-business community meetings in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. The Prime Minister will also participate in the G-20 Summit in Australia, following which he shall travel to Fiji after a gap of 33 years. Indian Embassy in Sri Lanka got copy of verdict against fishermen: MEA

New Delhi, Nov 11 (ANI): The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka obtained a copy of the judgment that gave death sentence to five fishermen, said foreign ministry spokesperson in New Delhi. The court has convicted five Indian fishermen on the charge of drug trafficking. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said that the embassy had approached best legal brains in Sri Lanka to appeal against the verdict. However, Akbaruddin refused to comment on the BJP leader Subramanian Swamy’s statement over the transfer of five fishermen to an Indian jail under a bilateral agreement. However, it failed to maintain this level and declined afterwards to 27,818.23, showing a loss of 55.36 points or 0.2 per cent at 27,813.27 at 11.31 a.m. local time. Market Expert Akash Jindal said that sensex may cross 30,000 level as India is being seen as an attractive destination by the international investors. He said that India is more attractive for international investors than Brazil, Russia and China or other emerging market. India doubles scholarship to Bhutan students

Thimphu, Nov 09 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said the government had doubled the scholarship amount to Bhutanese students during his two-day visit. Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and other dignitaries were present at the event where Mukherjee unveiled a school project and a 546-km road project with India’s assistance. Addressing a convention in capital Thimphu, Mukherjee said there was a deep confidence and trust between the two countries and people. Three agreements were signed. One between the Royal University of Bhutan and the National Innovation Centre in India, another between the Royal University of Bhutan and the University of English and Foreign Languages in India and the third between the Royal Civil Service Commission and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM).
