Congress' Preneet Kaur wins Patiala by poll

Patiala, Aug 25 (ANI): Congress leader and former union minister Preneet Kaur on Monday won the Patiala Assembly seat. She defeated Bhagwan Dass Juneja, her rival from SAD, by over 23,000 votes. The seat fell vacant after former chief minister Amarinder Singh, husband of Kaur, got elected to Lok Sabha from Amritsar. Patiala seat was retained by Congress. Aug 25, 2014

Bangalore, Aug 23 (ANI): Thousands of mourners paid their last respects to Jnanpith award winner and Kannada literary icon UR Ananthamurthy, who passed away on Friday. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah along with his cabinet ministers, Union Ministers Ananth Kumar and DV Sadananda Gowda, Kannada writers and leaders of all parties paid tribute to Ananthamurthy. The mortal remains of Ananthamurthy were kept for public homage at the premises of the Ravindra Kalakshetra as the state observed three days of mourning. SC dismisses plea seeking stay on UPSC prelims

New Delhi, Aug 23 (ANI): In a major blow to CSAT agitating students, the Supreme Court on Saturday rejected a petition seeking stay on the Union Public Services Commission preliminary examination, scheduled on Sunday. The Public Interest Litigation, filed by Agnesh Kumar, was heard by a bench headed by Justice Dattu in an urgent hearing despite the day being a court holiday. Nagpur, Aug 22 (ANI): Union transport minister, Nitin Gadkari, launched two ethanol-run buses in Nagpur on Friday with the initiative of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. Gadkari said the launch of eco friendly buses will encourage the concept of producing fuel out of alternative sources. Golaghat, Aug 22 (ANI): Local administration relaxed curfew for six hours in violence-hit Golaghat district of Assam to allow residents to buy essential commodities on Friday. The latest wave of violence has left at least 20 dead and forced thousands to flee their homes. The situation aroused when two victims hailing from Golaghat district were hit by bullets fired by unidentified persons from Nagaland side while they were protesting against the kidnapping of two teenagers by suspected miscreants last week. A student union has withdrawn threat to block the national highway, connecting neighbouring state of Nagaland after recent spate of violence. Sanjiv Chaturvedi not eligible for AIIMS CVO post: Harsh Vardhan

New Delhi, Aug 21 (ANI): Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Dr Harsh Vardhan said on Thursday that Indian Forest Service officer Sanjiv Chaturvedi is not eligible for the post of Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Chaturvedi, an Indian Forest Service officer of the Haryana cadre, was removed from the post of Chief Vigilance Officer ( CVO) of AIIMS. This was done even though his appointment order had been for a fixed tenure of four years, ending in June 2016.
