NDFB(S) platoon commander killed in encounter

Kokrajhar, Jan 11 (ANI): Self-styled platoon commander of tribal militant group National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Sonobijit) was killed in an encounter with joint team of police and armed border force in Assam. Identified as Jwblang, he was involved in the December 23 attack on Pakhriguri village in Assam in which five tribal people were also killed. Last month over 80 people were killed in militant attacks in different districts of the northeastern state. Police believe that a faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), was behind coordinated attacks on tea plantation workers and their families. A joint operation was launched by police and armed border force, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), near Khawsibazar area under Serfanguri police station in which the militant was killed. Jan 11, 2015

India, Bangladesh officials meet to discuss border issues

Agartala, Jan 10 (ANI): A two-day meet between Indian and Bangladeshi delegates began on Friday in Tripura, to discuss issues related to trans-border crimes, insurgent movements, human trafficking, narcotics and smuggling. Agartala city is hosting a 30-member delegation from Bangladesh for the India-Bangladesh Joint Border Conference. Personnel from India's paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh's Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were also in attendance at the district magistrate-level meet. First phase of 'Bishwa Ijtema' begins in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Jan 10 (ANI): Thousands of Muslim devotees gathered on the bank of River Turag near Dhaka city for the first phase of this year's world congregation, or Bishwa Ijtema. Despite Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 20-party alliance's countrywide blockade, devout Muslims across the globe assembled in Tongi, 20 kilometres off the capital city of Dhaka, to participate in the congregation, known as the second largest annual gathering of Muslims after the Hajj. The first phase of Ijtema will conclude on Sunday amid the final prayers 'Akheri Munajat' while the second phase will be held from January 16 to 18. Eight floating bridges have been placed by the army engineers so that devotees can cross the River Turag with ease. The Bishwa Ijtema is being held at same site since 1966 and is organised by World Tablig Council, which preaches teachings of Islam and Prophet Muhammad. Jan 10, 2015

Passengers miffed as Pakistan restricts run of bus service at Wagah border

Wagah, Jan 10 (ANI): The decision of Pakistan to restrict the run of a bus service at Wagah border following an intelligence alert that militants may target the bus has angered passengers. Passengers travelling from Pakistan said they were severely inconvenienced as it involves more time. Early this week, Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation decided to restrict the entry of buses running under the Pakistan-India friendship service from Lahore to Delhi till Wagah border due to militant threats. Politicos react as JandK heads for Governor's rule after Omar decides to quit as Caretaker CM

New Delhi/ Jammu, Jan 09 (ANI): Political leaders on Friday react as Jammu and Kashmir heads for Governor's rule with incumbent NN Vohra sending a report to the Centre on the political impasse after Omar Abdullah asked him to relieve him as caretaker Chief Minister of the state. Omar Abdullah told him that the state needed a full-time administrator to deal with the situation along the border with Pakistan and providing relief to flood-affected people in the Kashmir valley. Reacting on the same, NC leader Davinder Singh Rana said that Abdullah has taken this decision in view of the larger interest of the people of the state. BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi said that since JandK got a fractured mandate, situation in the state is obvious.
