India steps up security in border towns ahead of Republic Day

Amritsar, Jan 17 (ANI): Security has been tightened across India ahead of Republic Day's celebrations on January 26. Extra vigil is being mounted at border towns as Indian security agencies fear militant attacks from across the border ahead of US President Barack Obama's visit to the country. Obama will be the first US President to attend a Republic Day celebration. He is the only US President to visit the country twice while in office. Market along India-Bangladesh border inaugurated to boost trade

Agartala, Jan 14 (ANI): Trade Minister Nirmala Sitharaman along with her Bangladeshi counterpart Tofaile Ahmed inaugurated third border market or 'haat' along the border in Tripura to boost trade between the two countries. The market is set up within five kilometres radius at the border, which will enhance local trade and people-to-people contact. Sitharaman said that the market would build better relations and benefit small purchasers. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in October 2010 on Border Haats and Border Trade along the India-Bangladesh border. Meanwhile, Ahmed said he was grateful to Indian government for awarding duty free, quota free market access in almost all the items except two-alcohol and tobacco.
