Phailin aftermath: At least 16 dead due to floods in Odisha

Puri, Oct 26 (ANI): At least 16 people have died owing to floods in Odisha, where the situation remained grim even as major rivers were receding on Saturday. Post the Phailin cyclone, Odisha has been struck by floods now, which have resulted in several villagers becoming homeless. As per the latest report, a breach in the embankment of the river Malaguni resulted in flooding of the Kanas block. Kanas block is located in the Puri district of Bhubneshwar. The government has claimed that several boats were put into service to rescue the villagers. The rescued villagers have been served with flattened rice, molasses, drinking water and medicines. Puri, Oct 20 (ANI): Floods triggered by cyclone Phailin, which has left a wave of disaster in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, left hundreds of villagers stranded in eastern Puri district, forcing them to take shelter in rescue homes. At least 15 people have died in this fury of nature. On the sixth day of the floods, the embankment of River Malaguni broke due to the force of the flood waters and many villages in Odisha were marooned. Though the water has started receding but around 50,000 affected villagers have nowhere to go as their houses were washed away with the floods. Oct 20, 2013

Cyclone Phailin: Restoration of train services now main aim, says Railways

New Delhi, Oct 13 (ANI): Cyclone Phailin that hit coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh on Saturday evening, destroyed railway signals and high-tension electricity wires and uprooted tracks and railway platforms at various stations, bringing the rail services in the region to a halt. Talking to mediapersons in New Delhi, East Coast Railway spokesperson Anil Saxena said on Sunday that more than 100 trains have been cancelled in Bhadrak, Puri and Palasa sections while at least 25 other trains have been diverted.
