Fashion show in Manipur to promote state's handloom sector

Imphal, Jan 07 (ANI): Manipur's rich and colourful handloom is well projected by many Northeast based designers. In a recent event titled 'Elegance of the Dancing Looms', some 10 Manipur based fashion designers showcased a fusion of ethnic and modern outfits. The fashion extravaganza was organised by "Blue Wings" with an aim to promote the traditional indigenous attires of the state and attract the attention of national and foreign customers. Many models from Brazil, Slovakia, Ukraine and Russia along with several models from the Northeast sashayed down the ramp at the Bheigyachandra Open Air Theatre in Imphal, showcasing a variety of interesting attires. The collections showcased during the event included bridal attires, handloom outfits, modern designs and ready to wear casual garments. Actress Lin Laishram was one of the show stoppers. Jan 7, 2015

Camel fest in Rajasthan enthralls tourists

Bikaner, Jan 06 (ANI): Camel race in shimmering sand dunes of Rajasthan enthralled Indian and foreign tourists at the International Camel Festival. Camels, which are also known as the ship of the desert due to their ability to store water for several days, mesmerised the onlookers as they competed with each other with great vigour. The tourists, who arrived in Bikaner district of Rajasthan from western countries like Australia, Germany, Canada and England, were thrilled as they watched the race keenly and enjoyed every moment of it. Apart from camel race, camel dance, camel decoration competitions and camel wrestling, and several village sport events were also organised at the festival. A tourist from Germany, Gehash said he was delighted to witness the camel race. The tourists were fascinated as they saw beautifully decorated camels dance to traditional tunes at the festival, jointly organised by Rajasthan Tourism and Bikaner district administration. New Delhi, Jan 06 (ANI): As BSE Sensex and Nifty dropped after hitting 1 month highs, Market Expert Akash Jindal said that the global pessimistic sentiments' over crude oil price was the cause of the drastic fall. Jindal said that the rate of the crude oil is going down which is good for India as the inflation will go down but will adverselt affect other countries. He said that the global sentiments are down over the crude oil price as many economies are dependent on the same. He also advised Indian investors not to panic in such situation. The benchmark BSE Sensex tumbled over 588.15 points to 27,254.17 and the NSE Nifty dipped below the 8,300-mark in opening trade on Tuesday on heavy selling by funds and investors amid global sell-off on worries about Eurozone and sinking oil prices. MEA briefs about Indian labourers' dispute in Sri Lanka

New Delhi, Jan 05 (ANI): Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin on Monday briefed about the dispute between Indian labourers and a Sri Lankan company in Colombo. Akbaruddin said that the Indian Foreign Ministry is maintaining continuous contact with the High Commission in Colombo to keep information updated. He added that the Indian authorities have also been giving the labourers allowance. Petition filed in India against US firm for using Mahatma Gandhi's image on beer cans

Hyderabad/ New Delhi, Jan 04 (ANI): A lawyer in Hyderabad city of Andhra Pradesh filed a petition on Sunday against a US liquor company for using iconic freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi's picture on beer cans. New England Brewing Company came out with beer cans named 'Gandhi-Bot' claiming that their intention was to pay homage to Gandhi. He also said that using Gandhi's image on the beer cans is punishable under Indian laws. Matt Westfall, head brewer and partner at the New England Brewing Company, has apologised on behalf of the company through mail. Meanwhile, CPI leader D Raja said the American company should understand the sentiments of people. Varanasi/Amritsar/Visakhapatnam, Jan 2 (ANI): Indians on 1st January kick started the New Year celebrations by visiting shrines to offer prayers. Long queues of faithful could be seen outside major Hindu and Sikh shrines across India. The faithful believe visits to temples on the New Year day bring prosperity, good health and peace in the family. The northern temple town of Varanasi, nestled on the banks of the holy river Ganga, woke up to holy chants by priests. The temple was teeming with the faithful since early morning. Foreign tourists, who regularly visit this temple town for solace, were spellbound by the elaborate rituals. In the northern Indian city of Amritsar, devotees were seen thronging the Golden Temple, the holiest shrine of the Sikhs, since early morning. Many took a holy dip before taking part in the prayers. Some of the devotees said they looked forward to a drug free Punjab in 2015. Temples in Visakhapatnam in southern Andhra Pradesh witnessed large flow of devotees on the occasion of "Vaikuntha Ekadashi" which coincides with New Year. Security beefed up in Gujarat after Pakistani boat blows off, killing four

Gujarat, Jan 03 (ANI): Security has been beefed up at Porbandar and Gir Somnath coasts in Gujarat after a Pakistani fishing boat laden with explosives bound for India blew up, after the Indian coast guard tried to stop and search it. All four people on board the boat were killed in the explosion. Indian intelligence said the crew was planning "an illicit transaction" when the vessel was intercepted on New Year's Eve in the Arabian Sea, 365 km off the western coast, according to a government statement. The Indian Coast Guard chased the Pakistani boat for almost an hour and fired warning shots before it stopped. The crew hid below the deck and set the boat on fire. It was not possible to independently verify the Indian account. Authorities have stepped up vigil at Gir Somnath district, including the famous Somnath temple, along with the coastal areas.
