Bhopal gas tragedy victims to start indefinite fast from November 10

Bhopal, Nov 04 (ANI): Victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy would begin an indefinite fast in New Delhi from November 10, pressuring the central government for additional compensation. The Bhopal Gas Tragedy is one of the worst industrial disasters in history. It was 12 a.m. on December 3, 1984 when 40 tonnes of toxic Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) leaked from the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, killing thousands and condemning thousands more to chronic illness. Recently, the victims were frustrated on the news of death of Warren Anderson, chief of Union Carbide, who did not face any trial for his crimes. An activist supporting the victims, Rachna Dhingra, said that the government should update the facts and figures of dead and injured victims so that compensation can be taken from Union Carbide Corporation. Seven Indian soldiers held captive by Somali pirates for 4 years return to a grand welcome

Mumbai, Nov 03 (ANI): The seven Indian soldiers who remained in the captivity of Somali pirates for four years returned to their motherland to receive a warm welcome at the Mumbai airport. Somali pirates freed the seven Indian sailors in exchange for an undisclosed ransom on October 31. The sailors were held since the pirates hijacked the Panama-flagged ship MV Asphalt Venture in September 2010. Eight of their colleagues were freed by the pirates along with the ship in April 2011 for a ransom. Their captors said at the time that they would only release the seven sailors when their fellow Somali pirates held by Indian authorities were freed. It was not clear if their demand had been met. The seven sailors were given a grand welcome by the National Union of Seafarers of India in Mumbai. They were garlanded, held on shoulders and cheered on. Nov 3, 2014

Bhopal/ New Delhi, Nov 01 (ANI): Victims of 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy voice frustration on the news of Warren Anderson's death - the chief of the ill-fated Union Carbide plant under whose stewardship the world's worst industrial disaster took place. An activist, Satinath Sarangi, who works with the victims, said that the Indian government did not put in much effort for convicting Anderson or conducting a fair trial. It was 12 a.m. on December 3, 1984 when 40 tons of toxic methyl isocyanate leaked from the plant. An estimated 574,372 people have been affected in some way by the gas; health activists say more than 150,000 have been seriously affected. People in Bhopal felt relieved on hearing the news of Anderson's death, to whom they refer as a criminal and said that his death will make no difference to the case. Nov 1, 2014
