Cyclone Helen to hit coastal southern India: IMD

Vishakhapatnam, Nov 21 (ANI): The Indian Meteorology Department (IMD) predicts a severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours (November 22) with strong winds, heavy rainfall and big tides already lashing along the coastal Andhra Pradesh. Duty officer, Krishna Bhagavan at the cyclone warning centre of the IMD gave the weather forecast. Fishing operations have been completely suspended due to the sea condition that is expected to get rough. Dussehra or Vijaya Dashami celebrates the victory of good over evil. Hindus observe the day through special prayer meetings and food offerings to the goddess Durga, who is considered as Shakti or cosmic energy. Legend has it, when demon King, Mahishasur, vanquished the gods, their king, Indra, approached the Holy Trinity, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. They in turn sought the help of the divine mother Durga who, equipped with lethal weapons fought with Mahishasur for nine days and nights and eventually killed him on the tenth day. And thus every year, people across the country celebrate the day as Dusshera. Be it Jammu & Kashmir or Uttar Pradesh, everywhere goddess Durga bind together Hindus and Muslims with the thread of communal amity. Muslims in Aligarh make the effigies of goddess Durga with equal fervour and devotion. Dusshera in Doda region of Jammu & Kashmir is celebrated in different manner. As the occasion is also believed to be the day when Lord Rama vanquished the ten-headed demon king Ravana. New Delhi, Oct 13 (ANI): Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday visited the Subhash Park in New Delhi where the effigy of the evil king Ravana, Meghnad and Kubhakaran burned at about 06:15 PM to mark the celebration of Hindu festival Dussehra. The dignitaries then visited the Ramlila Maidan like every year to witness the ritual. The other high dignitaries present at the site were Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dekshit and Law Minister Kapil Sibal along with Priyanka Gandhi. The VIPS were escorted to a flower bedecked stage by the organisers of the event soon after their arrival at the ground. The atmosphere in the ground was one of traditional gaiety, fun and frolic. Security has been beefed up in the city, as roughly one million people enthusiastically participated in the procession every year. People thronged the venue, which was decorated with sparkling lights and colourful buntings. Devotees were seen praying before the children dressed in mythological charters of Ramayana, carrying offerings and earthen-lit lamps that created a peaceful ambiance. People in large numbers came to seek Lord Rama's blessings.
