Bhopal's toxic legacy lives on, activists urge govt to address woes

Bhopal, Nov 30 (ANI): An activist working with Bhopal gas leak victims, Satinath Sarangi, said that even 30 years after the industrial disaster the government has not been able to provide the victims the necessary relief and rehabilitation. On the night of December 02, 1984, the factory owned by the US multinational Union Carbide Corp accidentally leaked cyanide gas into the air, killing thousands of largely poor Indians in Bhopal city of Madhya Pradesh. Thirty years later, the toxic legacy of this factory lives on, say human rights groups, as thousands of tonnes of hazardous waste remains buried underground, slowly poisoning the drinking water of more than 50,000 people and affecting their health. Sarangi, who is the founder and managing trustee of charitable Sambhavna Trust and a member of Bhopal Group for Information and Action, admits that government has not been able to provide the tragedy survivors with right treatment. Northeast festival in New Delhi sends a message of national integration part - 2

New Delhi, Nov 30 (ANI): ‘Insurgence to Resurgence’ was the theme of the 2nd edition of the “Northeast Festival - Connecting People, Celebrating life”, at the Indira Gandhi National Center for Arts in New Delhi. The 4-day long cultural extravaganza was organised by Trend MMS, with support from the eight northeastern states, Union Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of DoNER and the Northeast Community, Delhi. Sportspersons from the northeast who won medals at the recent Commonwealth and Asian games were felicitated at the inaugural session. Leaders, policy makers and various stakeholders came together for discussion sessions on critical issues including tourism, employment, business opportunities and investment in IT sector in Northeast. Fashion designers from the region put together a vibrant show showcasing the traditional weaving patterns, rich colorful fabrics and jewelry worn by the numerous tribes of the Northeast. AMU students protest against political interference in the university

Aligarh, Nov 28 (ANI): AMU students on Friday protested against political interference in the University. In protest the students shouted slogans and took out a march holding banners and placards. Some BJP leaders have decided to hold a demonstration on the campus on the birth anniversary of Raja Mahendra Pratap, an alumnus of AMU, whose family was closely associated with Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the founder of the institution. In a letter to Union Human Resource Development minister Smriti Irani, the Aligarh Muslim University’s Vice-Chancellor wrote that there could be huge communal unrest if the birth anniversary of freedom fighter Pratap is observed on the campus. Security beefed up in Assam ahead of PM's visit for DGPs conference

Guwahati, Nov 28 (ANI): Security stepped up ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with the police chiefs in Assam. Modi and Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh will address the two-day meet, which begins on Saturday, and being held in Assam for the first time. Directors general of police (DGPs) and inspectors general of police (IGPs) from the states and union territories, chief ministers of the northeastern states, officials from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and paramilitary forces will take part in it. Director General of Police Khagen Sarma said all precautionary measures are being taken to prevent any untoward incident. India's northeast consists of eight states which are beset with militancy and insurgency.
