AIBA says future bleak for Boxer Sarita Devi, Reactions flow

New Delhi, Nov 13 (ANI): L Sarita Devi's amateur boxing career could be finished after her "unacceptable" behaviour at the Incheon Asian Games where the fighter refused to accept her bronze medal on the podium, said the president of the governing AIBA. Sarita was furious after losing her semi-final to local favourite Park Ji-na in the women's lightweight division. She refused to wear the medal when it was presented to her, taking it only in her hand before trying to drape it over Park. When the presentation was over, Sarita left the medal behind, despite being told to take it with her. Meanwhile, former Indian Sports Minister, MS Gill, said that it was very unfortunate and athletes should respect the judgement. New Delhi/ Mumbai, Nov 06 (ANI): A new rule has been imposed upon women boxers all over the world that they will have to carry the doctor's certification after undergoing a pregnancy test prior to participation in any boxing championship. The Vice President of Indian Orthopaedic Association, Tarlochan Singh said that this was already a mandatory practice apart from a certification from a doctor. He added that there was nothing discriminatory in the rule for India as the practice is applicable worldwide. Secretary of Sports Department, Ajit Saran said that the Indian sports federation cannot do anything about the rule as it has been applied by AIBA for all boxers. Secretary of Boxing India Jay Kowli said that there is no need to create an issue out of the rule because it is in the benefit of women boxers to prevent them of any injury if they are pregnant. Boxing India files appeal against world body ban on Sarita Devi

New Delhi, Oct 27 (ANI): The President of Boxing India Sanjay Jajodia said on Monday that Boxing India will appeal to the world body of boxing AIBA against world body ban on Sarita Devi. Imphal, Oct 26 (ANI): The banned boxer, Sarita Devi and Boxing India is confident of her return to the ring before too long after the International Boxing Federation suspended the 29-year-old for her petulant display at the recent Asian Games at Incheon, South Korea. International Boxing Association had suspended Laishram Sarita Devi from all international competitions and events for protesting during the Asian Games in Incheon. Devi was furious after losing her light (57-60kg) semi-final boxing bout with South Korea's Park Ji-na on September 30, believing she should have been declared the winner. Devi refused to wear the bronze medal when it was presented to her, taking it only in her hand before trying to drape it over Park. When the presentation was over, Sarita left the medal behind, despite being told by the organisers to take it with her. The International Boxing Federation took a dim view of her actions, submitting a formal report to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) over her behaviour. New Delhi, Oct 22 (ANI): Congress leader Ajay Maken on Wednesday said that the Indian boxing federation and the sports ministry should have the guts to take the case of boxer Sarita Devi at the highest level. He added that the entire country should stand up with the Boxer and her coach. AIBA on Wednesday provisionally suspended Boxer Laishram Sarita Devi for refusing to accept the bronze medal at the Asian Games podium ceremony. Her coach GS Sandhu, Blas Iglesias Fernandez and Sagar Mal Dhayal as well as Indian chef-de-mission AJ Sumariwalla were also suspended by the AIBA. AIBA said that it will not allow any of them to participate at all levels of various competitions, events and meetings until further notice. Boxer Sarita Devi, while protesting against a controversial verdict, had refused to wear the bronze medal on the podium during the ceremony for the 57-60 kg category.
