Manipur, Jan 3 (ANI): The annual Orange festival in Tamenglong district is to boost the morale of orange growers in the region as they bring the best of their products to win an award. This year, more than 300 orange cultivators participated with a variety of orange crops. Inaugurated by Chief Minister Ibobi Singh, the mega event helps to motivate other farmers in the region to grow oranges. The annual occasion also helps to promote tourism in the state. Folk dance troupes from different parts of the state performed enthralled the visitors. Many artists performed Pung Chalom and Thang-ta. Handicrafts stalls were also put up to promote local artisans. As part of the event, 22 girls walked the ramp for Orange Queen Beauty Pageant title. After a tough competition Kapagonglui of Tamenglong bagged the crown. Jan 3, 2015

Agriculture sector in the Northeast to benefit from scientific practices

Assam, Dec 04 (ANI): Endowed with rich natural resources and suitable climatic conditions, the Northeast region provides a perfect environment for the cultivation of vegetables and fruits. While it has huge potential in horticulture production, the region has to depend on other states due to lack of good quality seedlings. In a move to be self-reliant, the first of its kind agri hub nursery was inaugurated at the horticulture farm on Assam Agriculture University campus in Jorhat. It has been developed at a cost of Rs. 15 crores financed under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikash Yojana. The nursery will annually produce 48 lakhs seedlings of various vegetables and seasonal flowers. This new project will give a huge boost to production and ultimately help in generating more income for the farmers. Dec 4, 2014

Apple festival satiates taste buds of tourists in Shimla

Shimla, Sep 26 (ANI): Tourists thronged hill town of Shimla to witness different varieties of apples during two-day apple festival. Over 50 varieties of apples and apple products were put on display during the fest to attract tourists. Organizers believe that this attempt will promote tourism and bring people to apple orchards as well. Varieties like- Royal Delicious, Red Delicious, Gale Gala, Grammy Smith, Scarlet Spur, Super Chief, Golden Delicious, Redlum Gala, Redgold, and Rich a Red were on display at the festival, jointly organized by tourism and horticulture department. Organiser and vice-chairman of Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Board, Major Vijay Singh Mankotia, said that they wanted the tourists to reach up to the original apple orchards and make their own choice.
