Ramban, March 14 (ANI): Kashmir has been struggling to fight the incessant and unseasonal downpour and snowfall that have caused landslides, damaged property throwing life out of gear since last three days. The rains and landslides have caused widespread damage to the private and government property in Ramban district where several residents were forced to leave their houses and shift to safer havens. The Jammu -Srinagar National Highway (NH44) is also closed for vehicular traffic since past three days because of the landslides at several places, leaving several passengers and tourists stranded at different places. In a bid to promote education among poor and orphan girls, the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya is providing free education to some 50 orphan girls from poor tribal families in central Kashmir’s Budgam district. Besides education, free accommodation, books and stationary are also being provided to the girls. In the past ten years many model villages have come up in Jammu & Kashmir. But nothing has changed in Nud Kapahi village. It still lacks basic infrastructure. Damaged roads, lack of sanitation and no supply of electricity are some problems faced by the villagers here. The residents of Doda face many problems due to the condition of roads. Handwara, March 10 (ANI): Two Lashker-e-Toiba militants were killed an Army officer was injured in an encounter between the two sides in Handwara area of Kupwara district in Kashmir, police said. The encounter took place when security forces cordoned off a house in Malikpora village in Vilgam area of Handwara, 85 kms from here, following information about presence of militants there. The police officer said the militants opened firing on security forces, who retaliated, triggering off a fierce gun battle. The aim of setting up these new units is to provide justice at the doorstep of the common man. Tirshi village, about 12 km from district headquarter Udhampur, has not got electricity since independence. People here, especially the students, face many problems due to the non-availability of electricity.
