Kashmir casts votes as India steps on Seventh phase of General Elections

Srinagar, April 30 (ANI): First-time voters lined up outside polling booths in Srinagar on Wednesday to cast their ballot in a crucial stage of general election. People in Srinagar came out in large numbers to cast their ballot for development and progress, despite shutdown called by separatists. Security forces were nevertheless keeping a close vigil to protect the voters. First time voter Shahid Amir said that he wanted to change the government there. Meanwhile, another voter, Shakeel Ahmed, ruled out any possibility of boycotting the elections. Voting in the world's most populous democracy is phased over several weeks, ending on May 12. Hyderabad, April 30 (ANI): Actor-turned politician K Chiranjeevi, made an embarrassing retreat after he was reprimanded by a voter for jumping the queue along with his family to cast vote on Wednesday in the ongoing general elections. Union Tourism Minister Chiranjeevi, along with his family, walked passed a long queue of voters in Hyderabad. An agitated voter, Kartiken, who had come all the way from London and was waiting for more than an hour to cast vote, instantly objected and asked him sarcastically whether he needed a special treatment. Shutdown in Kashmir as crucial phase of election kicks off

Srinagar, April 30 (ANI): A shutdown was observed in Kashmir on Wednesday during the seventh phase of general elections in response to a call given by hard line Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani and his moderate counterpart Mirwaiz Umer Farooq. Both separatist leaders reportedly asked the people to keep away from polling booths and not to vote for any of the candidates contesting the elections. Business establishments, schools and transport are closed and roads in the Kashmir Valley wore a deserted look. Security is heavily beefed up in the province which is giving the residents jitters. Several candidates, including National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah and opposition leader Tariq Hammed Qara are in the electoral fray for the Srinagar constituency. Apr 30, 2014

Voting underway in seventh phase of LS polls

Ahmedabad/ Lucknow/ Amritsar/ Birbhum/ Jhansi, April 30 (ANI): Eighty nine Lok Sabha constituencies spread across seven states and two union territories went to polls on Wednesday morning amid tight security arrangements. Voting is also underway for 119 assembly constituencies in Andhra Pradesh. Polling began at 7 a.m. and will continue till 6 p.m. However, in some sensitive areas of Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, the voting process will end at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively. Of the 89constituencies where polling is underway, 26 are in Gujarat, 17 in Telangana, 14 in Uttar Pradesh, 13 in Punjab, 9 in West Bengal, 7 in Bihar and one each in Jammu and Kashmir and the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. Ahmedabad/ Lucknow/ Amritsar/ Birbhum/ Jhansi, April 30 (ANI): Eighty-nine Lok Sabha seats spread over seven states and two Union Territories are observing polls in seventh phase of General Elections on Wednesday. These include all 26 seats in Gujarat, all 13 in Punjab; 17 seats in Andhra Pradesh, 14 in Uttar Pradesh, nine in West Bengal , seven in Bihar and one each in Jammu and Kashmir and Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. Some of the prominent BJP candidates contesting in this phase are its PM candidate Narendra Modi, LK Advani, Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti. Also, prominent Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Madhusudan Mistry, Capt. Amarinder Singh and Sriprakash Jaiswal are contesting in this phase. Congress leader Meem Afzal stated that Modi is unaware of Kashmir’s history so he should visit Kashmir once elections are over. Regional leaders in Tamil Nadu pay tribute to Major Mukund Vardarajan killed in Shopian

Chennai, April 28 (ANI): The Tamil Nadu government and the regional Congress leaders on Monday paid homage to one of the security personnel, Major Mukund Vardarajan at his Chennai residence. Major Mukund Vardarajan and sepoy Vikram Singh were killed by militants during an overnight gun battle that started Friday in Shopian, which is 55 kilometres away from Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar. Senior Congress leader E V K S Elangovan said fighting militancy is the biggest challenge in front of the country. Both the security personnel are survived by their wives and children. Acting on a tip-off about a militant hideout, security forces launched the search operation to flush them out.
