Irom Sharmila re-arrested in Manipur a day after her release from prison hospital

Imphal, Jan 24 (ANI): Human rights activist Irom Sharmila, on hunger strike for the last 14 years in protest against alleged army atrocities, was re-arrested, a day after being released from detention in Manipur. The activist was released from a state hospital after a court found no evidence to support earlier charges filed by state prosecutors that she was trying to commit suicide by refusing food. After walking out free, Sharmila again began her fast through the night. She was examined by a team of doctors from the government hospital. She was asked by the police to go to a hospital but she refused. She is in a government hospital under police watch where she is force fed through nose. Jan 24, 2015

President Mukherjee and PM Modi condoles passing away of Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah

New Delhi, Jan 23 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday condoled the passing away of Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah. In his condolence message on Twitter, President Mukherjee said, "Heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Saudi Arabia over the sad demise of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. In King Abdullah's passing, Saudi Arabia had lost a beloved leader, India a close friend and world, an elder statesman. King Abdullah had genuine warmth and affection for India and our people, was personally committed to improving bilateral ties," he added. Earlier in day Prime Minister Modi had also condoled the death of King Abdullah and said, "In King Abdullah, we have lost an important voice who left a lasting impact on his country. Court drops suicide charges against Irom Sharmila in Manipur

Imphal, Jan 23 (ANI): A court in Manipur dropped suicide charges against fasting human rights activist, Irom Sharmila who is on hunger strike for the last 14 years in protest against alleged army atrocities. In August last year, Sharmila, also known as the Iron Lady of Manipur, walked free from a prison hospital where doctors had force fed her to keep her alive after a trial judge found no evidence to support earlier charges filed by state prosecutors that she was trying to commit suicide by refusing food. However, within two days of release, she was arrested again. As soon as the news of Sharmila's release broke out, her supporters gathered outside the prison hospital where she was kept in custody. Police officials review security measures ahead of US President Obama's visit to Taj Mahal

Agra, Jan 21 (ANI): A meeting of top police officials was held in Agra city of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday to discuss the security measures to be put in place ahead of the visit of US President Barack Obama. The city of historic Taj Mahal, Agra, is set to become a fortress ahead of Obama's visit on January 27. The Taj Mahal will be closed to visitors on that day. Multi-tier security arrangements are in place for US President's visit. Inspector General (IG), Agra, Sunil Gupta said that an in-depth meeting review of the security arrangements was conducted. Three storey building collapses in New Delhi

New Delhi, Jan 21 (ANI): A three-storied building collapsed in Gautampuri locality in New Delhi in wee hours of Wednesday (January 21). However, no casualties have been reported so far. Deputy Commandant of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Asim Ul Haque, said that cracks had started showing in the building due to construction of another building behind it. He also said that clearing operations on the ground floor was underway and no casualties were expected from there as well. Ten fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Lax and poorly enforced construction standards amid booming demand for housing have resulted in frequent and deadly collapses across the country. Jan 21, 2015
