Japan hit by 6.8 magnitude earthquake leaving houses collapsed and injuring many people

Japan, Nov 23 (ANI): An earthquake with preliminary magnitude of 6.8 jolted central Japan on Saturday evening, temporarily trapping people in collapsed homes and leaving at least 39 people injured, police said. The Japan Meteorological Agency said no tsunami warning was issued after the quake, which was felt in capital Tokyo around 180 km away. The hardest-hit area appeared to be Hakuba village, which hosted events in the 1998 games. Many homes were lost in Otari, a nearby village to the north. Non-residential buildings were also destroyed, with officials still assessing the extent. Meanwhile, residents began going through the rubble and cleaning up their damaged homes after the overnight earthquake collapsed houses and triggered landslides. Local residents said they had little time to react when the earthquake hit. Nov 23, 2014
