Flood situation worsens in Kashmir

Srinagar, Sep 05 (ANI): Floods, triggered by heavy rainfall, disrupted normal life in Jammu and Kashmir, submerging vehicles and disrupting flights on Friday. Sixty-five people were killed after heavy rains caused flash floods in Kashmir, including a wedding party on a bus that was swept away, officials said on Thursday (September 04). Authorities declared a disaster alert in the region after two days of heavy rain hit villages across the Kashmir valley, causing the worst flooding in two decades. Heavy rain is expected for the next 48 hours. The state's main river, the Jhelum, and its tributaries are flowing several feet above the danger mark. Residents in Srinagar city said villages were inundated and marooned people were yet to get any government aid. According to local people, there have hardly been any rescue operations yet. Home Minister Rajnath Singh held a meeting in New Delhi to review the flood situation and has dispatched members of the National Disaster Response Force to assist the state government. Sep 5, 2014

Udhampur, Sep 05 (ANI): Heavy rains inundated many villages in Jammu and Kashmir killing at least 65 people. Incessant rains for the past about 48 hours have resulted in mud slides, flash floods and rising of water in all rivers. The Indian Army has immediately moved in deploying rescue operations in floods affected regions of Naoshera, Rajouri, Thanamandi and Poonch district of the state. The Army has been able to rescue almost 108 civilians as search and rescue operations are in full swing. He said that arrangements are being made for the rescue of people and to provide shelter for the stranded people. He announced that government as well as private schools and colleges will remain closed for 3 days in wake of incessant rainfall. Chand also said that temporary shelters are provided to those who had to leave their houses and food supplies are being provided. The national highway, which was reopened on Wednesday, was closed again due to landslide on the highway in Udhampur district. Jammu Srinagar National highway is the only link road between Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded at various points. Meanwhile, drivers said there was no arrangement even of water for stranded people. Haj pilgrims undergo vaccination drive in Kashmir

Srinagar, Sep 04 (ANI): The Jammu and Kashmir government organized a vaccination program along with Haj committee for aspiring pilgrims. The number of Haj pilgrims has increased in last few years and for safety of every pilgrim going to Saudi, the Saudi Kingdom had announced that without vaccination no pilgrim will be allowed to perform Haj. Executive Officer of Jammu and Kashmir Haj committee, Fayaz Ahmed Lone, said that every Haj pilgrim was expected to have a health and training card, which they have to show when they land in Saudi Arabia. He said that normally the vaccination costs a lot but during this drive it was being provided free of cost by the health department. Rescue operations begin as floods wreak havoc in Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir, Sep 04 (ANI): Rescue operations began in Jammu and Kashmir as floods, triggered by heavy rains, wreaked havoc. Two people trapped in floodwater were rescued by the army, fire service officials and police in a four-hour joint operation in Rajouri district of the state. Chief of Mang Dharhal village council, Mohammad Shabir, thanked the army and police for rescuing the flood victims. Incessant rains caused floods in the hilly district of Poonch. Due to torrential rains, the route of river in Poonch changed and started flowing towards the residential areas. A resident, Mohammad Razzaq, said several houses were destroyed in the locality.
