Kashmir witnesses sanitation drives after flood waters recede

Srinagar, Oct 03 (ANI): The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, has been witnessing frequent cleanliness and sanitation drives ever since the flood waters receded in the city, where more than one million people reside. Emergency workers have been battling to prevent waterborne diseases like cholera from spreading as fetid water swilled around the Kashmir valley after the worst flooding in more than a century. Sanitation and cleanliness drives have swung into motion as the waters recede after a month of heavy flooding. The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has deployed tippers, robotic arms and excavators, among other machinery alongside hundreds of staff members who have been cleaning roads and garbage non-stop. The Municipal Commissioner, GN Qasba, said that a record 22,000 metric tonnes of garbage had been extracted from the city after the floods. Pak says India inflexible on Siachen, Indian Experts react

New Delhi, Oct 03 (ANI): Pakistan foreign ministry's remark that India has never responded positively on proposals regarding demilitarisation of Siachen in Jammu and Kashmir was slammed by the Indian Experts on Friday. While addressing a briefing in Islamabad, Pakistan's foreign ministry spokesperson Tasnim Aslam had said a proposal to demilitarise Siachen and declare it as a Peace Park had cropped up during bilateral discussions in the past, but Indian policy towards resolution of this issue always remained inflexible. Aslam said the proposal was initiated to find peaceful solutions in the region where the ecosystem is getting affected due to regular conflicts. However, Lieutenant General (retired), PN Hoon, dismissed it as nonsense. Meanwhile, former director general of police, Jammu and Kashmir, MM Khajuria, said since Pakistan lost to India in terms of acquiring hold in Siachen, they have been making such comments often. Civilians injured, houses damaged as Pak rangers resort to unprovoked firing in J and K

Poonch, Oct 03 (ANI): Some civilians sustained injuries while some lost their houses as Pakistani Rangers violated ceasefire and resorted to unprovoked firing on the Indian positions along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. The entire Gagrian village in the Poonch sector was affected in the firing. According to the villagers of Gagrian, the firing continued till midnight and almost all civilians stayed awake all night. The injured were taken to the hospital immediately. Ahmed said the entire locality got strong tremors as bombs started falling on the village. Two militants of Hizbul Mujahideen killed in J and K encounter

Pulwama, Oct 03 (ANI): Two militants of separatist outfit Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in an encounter with security forces in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. Reportedly, the security forces got information about the presence of these militants and acted upon it. The militants opened fire while the forces were closing in on the hideout of these militants. Of the two militants killed, one has been identified as Riyaz Naikoo while the other is said to be a top militant of the outfit. Hizbul Mujahideen is a Kashmiri separatist group designated as a militant organisation by India. It is active in Jammu and Kashmir since 1989. Poonch, Oct 02 (ANI): At least six civilians were injured after Pakistani Rangers violated ceasefire and resorted to unprovoked firing on Indian positions of de-facto border, Line of Control (LoC), in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. The ceasefire violations by Pakistan were met with retaliation by India's paramilitary Border Security (BSF) Force. The injured were later taken ti a government hospital in Jammu district. Father of an injured person, Khalil Ahmed said people started fleeing after there was firing for a long period.
