Security forces recover Improvised Explosive Device in Kashmir

Shopian, Oct 31 (ANI): Security forces recovered Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Shopian district of India’s northern state of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday (October 31), weeks ahead of the assembly elections in the state. The IED, weighing about four kilograms, was hidden inside a small gas cylinder. Indian army official, Major Vishal Kumar, said it was apparently planted to target security forces passing through the area. The traffic on the road was stopped briefly till the cylinder was recovered and taken to a safe place. The army official added the IED was later defused through a controlled explosion by the Bomb Disposal Squad. Oct 31, 2014

Srinagar, Oct 30 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leader Yasin Malik's supporters protested against their leader's arrest on Thursday. Malik was reportedly leading a campaign to boycott assembly elections scheduled to be held in Jammu and Kashmir next month, for which he was taken into preventive custody today.The supporters even pelted stones at the police in the city's Maisuma area, after which the police resorted to firing of tear gas shells and a baton charge to disperse the mob.Malik was previously arrested earlier this month, ahead of Eid prayers at Abi Guzar near Lal Chowk while he was preparing to hold an anti-election protest. Rajouri, Oct 30 (ANI): People continue to live in makeshift tents and are demanding compensation from the government, a month after the worst floods in a century hit Jammu and Kashmir. A resident, Mohammad Kabir, said they were concerned about their safety, especially children, as winters were approaching. Kabir said the government should take immediate measures to rebuild their houses and ensure regular water and power supply. The victims also complained that the government was not paying any heed to their losses and not issuing compensation for the same. Security forces gun down three militants in Kashmir

Handwara, Oct 29 (ANI): Security forces killed three militants in a gun battle in Handwara district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. A soldier was also reported dead. The encounter started at Rajwada forest of the district on Tuesday. On the tip off intelligence, a massive search operation was launched in a village where the three militants were suspected to be hiding. Reportedly, Indian army launched a joint search operation with the police on Monday night, which ended on Wednesday. The militants fired few rounds at the security forces to which they retaliated, reports said. State unit secretary of CPI-M in Jammu and Kashmir, Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami, said elections in the state should be conducted as scheduled for December. However, Kashmir's capital Srinagar has witnessed protests with people demanding the assembly polls be postponed.
