Pakistan welcomes UN Chief's offer to resolve Kashmir issue

Islamabad, Dec 12 (ANI): Pakistan welcomed the statement of the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in which he expressed his readiness to engage with India and Pakistan in resolving the Jammu and Kashmir issue. On December 9, Ban Ki-moon said that "If both countries request it, I am ready to engage further to assist in resolving this issue." Addressing a weekly briefing in Islamabad, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said the UN Chief's offer was "deeply appreciated". He called upon the two countries to resume their stalled composite dialogue. Aslam said Pakistan was committed to a result-oriented dialogue with India on the Kashmir issue, because the just resolution of the issue was of paramount importance for ensuring peace, stability and development in the region. Asked if India will agree to the UN chief's offer, Aslam said it was not a matter of choice because the UN resolutions which are applicable had been accepted by both Pakistan and India. Dec 12, 2014

Defence Minister lauds Kashmir for record voter turnout despite militant attacks

Srinagar, Dec 11 (ANI): Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday commended the people of Kashmir for record voter turnout and foiling all attempts by militants to disturb the ongoing poll process. Jammu and Kashmir recorded 58 percent voting in the third phase of elections on December 09, which was nearly six percent higher than the last time. Despite the biting cold and series of militant attacks, polling booths in Kashmir witnessed serpentine queues of residents waiting to cast their votes for a stable and able government. The five-phase elections in 87-member Kashmir assembly began on November 25. In the first two phases the voter turnout was high - more than 70 percent each.The polling will end on December 20 and results will be declared on December 23. Parrikar, who earlier during the day paid tribute to the soldiers who were killed in the militant attacks, lauded the army for tackling tough situations in the war torn valley. Dec 11, 2014

Srinagar, Dec 11 (ANI): Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday paid tributes to soldiers who were killed in a militant attack in Srinagar. Parrikar, accompanied by Army Chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag, visited Badami Bagh cantonment in the city. This was his first visit to the state after taking charge of the defence ministry. Militants had sneaked into an Indian military camp in Kashmir on December 05, killing 11 soldiers and police, the worst losses for security forces in six years in the Himalayan territory claimed by Pakistan. New Delhi, Dec 09 (ANI): The Election Commission of India on Tuesday briefed about voter turnout in third phase of assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand saying polls were conducted peacefully in all constituencies.
