Six die as cold wave tightens grip in India

Saharsa, Dec 27 (ANI): At least six people have died in Bihar due to extreme cold wave conditions, officials have confirmed. All the deaths were reported from Saharsa district in the state. Intense cold wave conditions continued unabated across India with mercury touching new lows. Saharsa district magistrate, Shashi Bhushan, said a probe has been ordered into the deaths. The cold has inconvenienced locals on the streets as they struggle to find means to keep themselves warm, often burning scraps of rubbish to create a bonfire. Soma, the mother of the deceased, said they rushed him to a local hospital after he felt uneasy, but could not survive. The sudden dip in temperatures is said to have been caused by snowfall in the Himalayas and has adversely impacted the upper half of the country. Separatist leader Yasin Malik sits on hunger strike, protests against atrocities

Srinagar, Dec 24 (ANI): Separatist leader Yasin Malik on Wednesday continued his hunger strike in Srinagar against what he alleged police highhandedness. Malik, chief of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), has been demanding the release of several youth detained by police during state elections. While a record 65 percent voted in five-phase elections, many tried to boycott the polls by staging protests and hurling stones at security personnel, forcing the latter to make arrests. India has long struggled to bring Kashmiris into the democratic mainstream and elections in the past have been marred by violence and low turn-out. Political leaders in Kashmir blame the federal government for failing to find a political solution as violence ebbed in the past few years. Dec 24, 2014
