Entrepreneur takes up revival of wooden ceiling artwork in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 19 (ANI): In a bid to keep heritage of wooden ceiling art or 'Khatamband' alive in Jammu and Kashmir, a young entrepreneur revived it by using polystyrene. 'Khatamband' is an art in which small pieces of wood are fitted into each other in patterns to form the ceiling. The process is hand crafted and without using nails. Small floral or geometrical squares are fitted through tiny grooves and the entire structure then is fitted on the ceiling. However, now the art is slowly dying and entrepreneur Yaseen Yousuf Khan has taken up its revival, using polystyrene and machines instead of wood. Jan 19, 2015

IED found and defused in Srinagar's Narbal area

Srinagar, Jan 19 (ANI): Indian army on Monday defused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Jammu and Kashmir. Police and army found a three-kg IED in a cooker in Narbal area. The bomb disposal squad rushed to the spot and the explosion was carried out in open fields. Accidental landmine blast injures man in Kashmir

Rajouri, Jan 19 (ANI): A man sustained serious injuries after he accidentally stepped on a landmine, triggering blast, along the international border in Jammu and Kashmir. The victim identified as Sewa Ram said he had taken his cattle for grazing along the Line of Control (LoC) in Sarya village. Ram was rushed to the district hospital by the army personnel after giving him preliminary treatment. Doctor Abdul Salam Choudhary said that though the injury was severe but the victim's foot could be saved. It is a common practice for countries to hide landmines across their borders. Jan 19, 2015

SSP of Sopore, Abdul Qayoom, said that the militants were hiding in a house and later killed in a gun battle after a joint operation was carried out by police and army together. Sopore, Jan 18 (ANI): A gun battle between the security forces and militants is currently underway in Sopore area of Jammu and Kashmir. Security forces cordoned off Saidpora village in Sopore following information about presence of militants in the area, a police officer said. According to reports, as the forces closed on the target house, the militants opened fire which was retaliated, triggering off the gunbattle. At least two militants are believed to be trapped inside the cordoned area, the officer said, adding there were no casualties on either side so far. Srinagar, Jan 17 (ANI): Traffic police in Jammu and Kashmir organised a rally to mark Road Safety Week in order to spread awareness on traffic rules and regulations among the residents. The week-long awareness rally by traffic authorities concluded on Saturday with various programmes including walkathon, road shows and seminars. Many hoardings and banners were also put up that read 'Safety is just not a slogan, it is a way of life' which was also the theme of this year's Road Safety Week. Residents of Kashmir valley expressed satisfaction at the initiative taken by the authorities that concerned people's safety. But they also expressed concern at the low maintenance of roads. Security stepped up in Kashmir ahead of Obama's visit

Srinagar, Jan 16 (ANI): Security has been strengthened in Jammu and Kashmir in view of US President Barack Obama's visit later in January for Republic Day celebrations. Inspector General of paramilitary Central Police Reserve Force (CRPF), SK Bhandari, said that the force was leaving no stone unturned to ensure full-proof security. Bhandari said infiltration bids are likely to rise in the state ahead of the high-profile visit. Reportedly, the security forces on Friday captured a dreaded terrorist belonging to the Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) from Choora area in Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore district. Two militants killed in ongoing encounter in Kashmir

Shopian, Jan 15 (ANI): Two militants have reportedly been killed on Thursday by Indian security forces in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. Following a tip-off, army carried out search operations in the region for militant hide-outs in the early hours. While the search operation was on, militants opened fire on the security personnel and a gun battle ensued. The encounter is underway. This is the second gun battle between militants and security forces in the state in a span of two days. A similar encounter had broken out in Sopore town on Wednesday. Huge cache of arms and ammunition seized in Kashmir

Poonch, Jan 15 (ANI): In a joint operation with Special Operations Group (SOG), local police in Jammu and Kashmir seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition from Surankote town. The security personnel carried out the operation based on consistent inputs received over a period of three to four days. They recovered several magazines of bullets, grenades, binoculars etc. Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Surankote, Ajay Sharma said that the tip-off also informed the security forces about suspected militant movement in the region. The operation was halted mid-way due to poor weather conditions. The security forces are likely to restart their search once the weather clears up as more arms and ammunition are believed to be hidden. Sharma added that the recovery of ammunition in such large numbers indicated that attempts were being made to revive militancy in the region. Jan 15, 2015
