Jammu, Jan 24 (ANI): Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Mufti Mohammed Syed on Saturday said that Jammu and Kashmir's betterment would be his only concern while indulging in negotiations for government formation in the state, adding that he will not trade the mandate given to his party by the people of the state. The PDP had recently rejected the National Conference's offer of support, and said that it is still involved in talks with the BJP on the issue of government formation. Governor's rule had been imposed in Jammu and Kashmir after the assembly elections in the state threw a fractured verdict, with no party able to win the required number of seats to form the government. Heavy snowfall disrupts normal life in northern India

Shimla/ Rajouri, Jan 24 (ANI): Heavy snowfall in northern India blocked roads, snapped electricity lines and disrupted normal life. Rooftops and roads in Narkanda area of Shimla city in Himachal Pradesh were covered in snow. Temperatures dropped to subzero levels and even the water in the pipelines was frozen. The roads became dangerous to drive or walk on as a layer of ice had formed on them. Residents also complained that heavy snow damaged their roofs. Meanwhile, residents in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir were forced to stay indoors due to plummeting temperatures and blocked roads. Army says security arrangements in J&K enhanced for Republic Day

Srinagar, Jan 24 (ANI): General Officer Commanding of Kashmir based 15 Corps, Lt Gen Subrata Saha, said on Saturday that security arrangements have been enhanced in Kashmir before Republic Day. Saha said that currently the situation along the Line of Control in Kashmir is stable. J and K separatist group calls for shutdown to protest Prophet's cartoons published by Charlie Heb

Srinagar, Jan 24 (ANI): A complete shutdown called by a separatist group in Jammu and Kashmir, to protest against blasphemous cartoons of Prophet Mohammad published in a French magazine, paralysed normal life. The call for protest was given by Chief of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), Yaseen Malik, against the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, which has been known for lampooning Islam. In the rally called 'The Prophet Prestige Rally', protestors shouted slogans against the magazine and demanded the cartoonists behind drawing Prophet's caricatures be hanged. Roads and markets in Srinagar wore a deserted look as shops across the valley remained shut and vehicles stayed off the roads. Snowfall blocks strategic highway in Kashmir valley

Udhampur, Jan 22 (ANI): Fresh spell of snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir threw life out of gear on Thursday, leading to the closure of strategic Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. According to the state authorities, over 300-kilometre-long highway has been closed for all types of vehicular traffic since early Thursday morning because of snowfall at some places. The suspension has stranded hundreds of vehicles at various points of the highway. The highway shall remain closed for traffic for uncertain period of time. Amritsar, Jan 21 (ANI): The former foreign minister of Pakistan, Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri rooted for peace between his country and India. Tensions have risen between the two countries since Prime Minister Narendra Modi called off peace talks with Pakistan in 2014 August. Sporadic rounds of heavy shelling have pounded villages along a previously peaceful stretch of border in Kashmir. Kasuri said that a peaceful environment was vital for development of the nuclear-armed nations. First International water birds census begins in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 21 (ANI): An international water birds census began in all wetlands of Jammu and Kashmir. The wildlife department began counting of water birds, in a bid to attract tourism as well. The census is being organised for the first time in the valley to know the count of migratory birds. Kashmir, which is famous for its natural beauty and water bodies, attract thousands of migratory birds. A team was formed for the work, which used special binoculars and other gadgets. Meanwhile, wildlife warden of Hokersar wetland, Imtiyaz Ahmad Lone, said that the census will be carried out with the help of volunteers. Lone said that this was a chance to popularize the wetlands in the valley and the census would help create interest among people and attract bird lovers to the wetlands. Poonch, Jan 20 (ANI): Army officials and local residents in Jammu and Kashmir took up the ambitious cleanliness drive. Army personnel and civilians swept streets and gathered garbage along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district as a part of 'Clean India' mission, or 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan'. Army officials of the Nangi Tekri Battalion along with the civilians participated in the campaign and swept a three-kilometre stretch. Meanwhile, another resident Pashuram said that the mission should be held once in a month. India's burgeoning towns and cities are littered with garbage, the result of massive urban migration, poor civic planning and inadequate waste disposal systems, and rivers and lakes are polluted with sewage and industrial effluents.
