Srinagar, Jan 28 (ANI): The wreath laying ceremony was being held on Wednesday for martyr Colonel MN Rai in Srinagar, who sacrificed his life while battling a group of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district. Colonel Rai was conferred the Yudh Seva medal by President Pranab Mukherjee on Republic Day for outstanding contribution in planning and conduct of operations including a gun battle with militants. General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Kashmir-based 15 Corps of the Indian army, Lieutenant General Subrata Saha said that Colonel MN Rai's quick thinking and retaliation led to death of terrorist in Tral. Two militants, two security officials killed in encounter in Kashmir

Pulwama, Jan 27 (ANI): Two militants were killed and an army officer and a police constable martyred on Tuesday (January 27) in an encounter in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. A gun battle broke out between the militants and security forces after the latter launched a cordon and search operation in Tral area on a tip off about the militants. The martyred army officer Colonel MN Rai had been awarded a gallantry award just yesterday. Reportedly, the militants belonged to the outfit Hizbul Mujahideen and some arms and ammunition was also recovered from the place of encounter. Militants have been targeting security bases in Kashmir since 1990s, when there was a full-blown insurgency against Indian rule in the region. Jan 27, 2015

Indian Army organises blood camp in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 27 (ANI): In a bid to reach out to locals in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian army on Tuesday organised a blood donation camp in the militancy-hit Srinagar district. This is the seventh blood donation camp organised by the army to help residents of Srinagar and nearby areas, affected by the devastating floods in September last year. While many of the soldiers donated blood, health official Javed Iqbal said many civilians also came forward to participate in the initiative. Requirement of blood has always been high in the state due to militancy and insurgency activities. There has also been an acute shortage of blood especially after the devastating floods last year. Republic Day celebrated peacefully in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar/ Jammu, Jan 26 (ANI): The 66th Republic Day celebrations in Srinagar passed peacefully, despite a call given by separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani for boycotting the occasion. The celebrations, which were held at the Bakshi Stadium in the city, began with the annual military parade and State Divisional Commissioner Rohit Kansal hoisted the national flag. Despite cold conditions in the valley, students from various schools participated in the event. Also a spectacular parade was held in Jammu region to celebrate the 66th Republic Day. Contingents of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and those of the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF) and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) also took part in the celebrations. The shutdown call was given by leaders of several Kashmiri separatist groups. All shops, business establishments and the public transport remained shut. Every year the separatists announce shutdown on Republic Day and Independence Day.
