State administration felicitated for rescue work during Kashmir floods

Srinagar, Feb 23 (ANI): Individuals who showed exemplary courage and selfless service to rescue people during the Kashmir floods last year were felicitated in an award function in Srinagar. The function was organised by the NGO Athwaas Kashmir in collaboration with some corporate houses. People from state administration, health department, social welfare department and volunteers from civil society were given awards for their contribution during the floods during the function. Security forces unearth ammunition dump in Kashmir

Doda, Feb 22 (ANI): Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir unearthed an ammunition dump in Doda district. In a joint operation, army and state police stumbled upon an old militant hideout where arms and ammunition were dumped. The police conducted searches at Gandho area following a tip-off and recovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition. One AK-47, two 12 bore rifles, one country made pistol besides some explosives were recovered. Doda in Jammu region of the state bore the brunt of militancy in the late eighties. Kashmir valley remained cut off from the rest of the country due to heavy rains, accompanied by snowfall and landslides. Normal life was paralyzed in the state's winter capital Jammu. Residents were angry as the local administration was providing little help to the marooned people. Nearly 700 lives have been claimed in the country due to the deadly disease, prompting officials to investigate the cause and step up efforts to combat the virus. The volunteers are distributing free face masks and literature at places where large gatherings take place. Suspected swine flu case reported in JandK

Doda/ Jaipur, Feb 21 (ANI): A suspected case of swine flu has been reported in Jammu and Kashmir. This comes after two people in the state lost their lives on Wednesday (February 18) due to the deadly H1N1 virus. A 13-year-old girl, suspected to be infected with the virus, is undergoing treatment in Doda district of Jammu. To check the spread of swine flu, Mir added, rapid response teams and separate wards for suspected patients were set up in district hospitals. A houseboat owner Taseen Ahmad said they undertake the coring exercise every two years to keep boats in good shape. The coring experts charge rupees 1,000 a day. Coring of boats includes filling of gaps on the floor of the boat with special grass and repairing the damaged portion with expensive timber of the valley known as "deodar". BJP hopes to iron out differences with PDP on AFSPA

New Delhi/ Jammu, Feb 19 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party said on Thursday that proper discussions are important before reaching a conclusion on the revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Jammu and Kashmir. Many civil rights activist and political parties like Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and National Conference (NC) have long been demanding to revoke AFSPA. However, the army has opposed their demands saying they are not even in favour of "partially withdrawing" the rule as it is essential to root out militants. PDP wants AFSPA removed while BJP is strongly against Article 370, which accords special status to Jammu and Kashmir. This could make the tie-up between the two parties uneasy. However, BJP is hopeful of resolving all differences and moving ahead on a positive note.
