It Happens: Devout Hindus take holy dip on full moon day in India

Allahabad, Nov 7 (ANI): Thousands of devotees converged at holy River Ganges in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state to take a holy dip on the occasion of 'Kartik Purnima' or full moon day on Thursday. Devout Hindus thronged river bank in northern Allahabad city to perform rituals at the confluence of three holy rivers-- Ganges, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati. As per tradition, holy dip in River Ganges is described as auspicious on full moon day as it leads to salvation. Legends say Ganges has flown from the heaven to the earth to wash away the worldly sins of mankind. Another devotee, Sushma, said earthen oil lamps are floated in the river and prayers are offered to the almighty. People in Hapur town also celebrated the full moon day. Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangements were made to avoid any mishap. Life on the banks of the Ganga begins well before dawn when thousands of pilgrims - men, women and children, come down to the river to wait for the rising sun. Nov 7, 2014

New Delhi, Nov 06 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday hosted a special programme on the occasion of Guru Nanak's birthday at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Hamid Ansari along with other senior leaders attended the ceremony. People from the Sikh community chanted hymns and recited prayers and the audience joined in. Mukherjee also addressed the audience on the occasion.
